Committee keeps current AI guidelines for now

School Committee · Meeting of October 21, 2026
Wilmington's School Committee opted to keep its current AI guidelines in place and form a working group after a heated debate over a proposed revision. Member Nicholas Golden called the draft "wildly too permissive," citing equity and mental-health concerns, while Vice Chair Jennifer Bryson praised it for teaching "literacy" rather than banning AI outright. Member David Ragsdale warned adopting even parts of the update could be hard to walk back, comparing it to shifting a political "Overton window." Earlier, the committee held a public hearing on naming the town's new elementary school, hearing that a 406-response survey favored "Northside Elementary School" (46 percent) over "North Elementary School" (42 percent) and "Salem Street Elementary School" (just under 12 percent); a recommendation is expected November 18.
Superintendent Poska also reported district enrollment of 2,842 students and a grade nine retention rate of 78.4 percent, among the highest in roughly a decade.
