Wilmington School Committee Advances Six Policies, Tables Two With August Deadline Looming

WILMINGTON — June 10, 2026 — Wilmington School Committee reorganizes subcommittees and fast-tracks a student-assignment policy with an August legal deadline. At its June 10 meeting, the committee unanimously advanced six student-related policies — covering medication administration, transfer students, homeless students, military families, foster care, and school choice — to a second read, while tabling policy JKAA, which governs student assignment to schools, after the wrong version was uploaded to the packet; the committee will take it through both reads at its June 24 meeting to meet the August compliance deadline. Policy Subcommittee Chair David Ragsdale said the new school choice policy introduces a sibling preference for admission, though Wilmington does not currently participate in the program. The committee also approved a subcommittee realignment placing Becky Lord on superintendent evaluation and Nick on the outreach and wellness subcommittees. On the construction front, member Turner reported that the state Department of Environmental Protection closed a citizen-raised arsenic concern at the MSBA school building site, finding levels to be naturally occurring, with construction set to begin around June 23. The theater program reported selling approximately 3,400 tickets across three productions involving 186 students this year.
