Wilmington School Committee Votes 6-1 to Back Jack Cushing Hall of Fame Dedication
WILMINGTON — April 8, 2026 — Wilmington School Committee endorsed a warrant article to dedicate the high school Athletic Hall of Fame to Jack Cushing, 6-1, ahead of the May 2 town meeting. The vote came after members signaled broad agreement that the district lacks a formal naming and memorial policy, with Member David Axelrod reporting that the policy subcommittee had already reviewed model language from other districts, including five-year waiting periods before a space can be named for a recently deceased or departed employee. Member Becky Lloyd cast the lone dissenting vote, saying she prefers community-inclusive names over dedications to individuals. In separate action, a motion to designate Friday, June 18, 2027, as a school day — prompted by Juneteenth falling on a Saturday that year — failed 2-5, with members citing unreviewed collective bargaining agreements and the symbolic weight of the holiday as reasons to pause.
